2017 HERO CARIBBEAN PREMIER LEAGUE – MATCH REPORT 4

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 132-3 (Gayle 66, King 39; Jacobs 22 for 1) beat Guyana Amazon Warriors 128-8 (Mohammed 41, Singh 28; Cottrell 2 for 28) by 4 runs.

The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots made it two from two against the Guyana Amazon Warriors as they came out on top in the fifth match of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL). A remarkable game came to life in a dramatic final over from Carlos Brathwaite, where he conceded only four runs and took three Warriors wickets, giving the Patriots their second victory of the tournament, and turning the match on its head.

After the losing the toss and being inserted by Warriors captain Rayad Emrit, the Patriots batted steadily, rather than spectacularly, to reach 132-3. However, smart bowling from Mohammad Nabi and Hasan Ali proved that any total was defendable at Lauderhill, and the Patriots came through for an unlikely win.

At halfway, observers may have thought they were 10 or 15 runs short of a winning total, after a subdued Chris Gayle was unable to reach his typical strike rates, but his 66 guided the Patriots to a competitive total of 132-3.

The Warriors started well with the ball, off-spinner Steven Jacobs almost having Gayle caught and bowled. The highlight of a quiet Powerplay which saw just 22 runs was when Chadwick Walton pulled off a wonderful stumping off the bowling off Jacobs, dismissing the dangerous Evin Lewis for just 4.

Hafeez was run out attempting a second run when Keemo Paul threw from the deep and Walton leapt high to divert the ball onto the stumps. Hafeez had looked in good touch but the wicket brought Brandon King to the crease, and the 97-run partnership between him Gayle and formed the backbone of the Patriots innings, and was ultimately match-winning.

Keemo Paul changed his pace very well and bowled tidily, while Steven Jacobs bowled his full notifications before the half way stage, keeping the pressure on Gayle and King. However, they progressed nicely, though a missed opportunity for a run out in the fourteenth over would have seen Gayle gone before the death, one of the only mistakes made by Walton on an otherwise great day for the keeper. Tanvir, who bowled tidily at the top of the innings, went the distance at the death as Gayle freed his arms, taking one over for 13 runs.

In reply, Walton was unable to carry his form with the gloves through to his batting, hitting a short delivery from Sheldon Cottrell straight to Evin Lewis at deep-square leg. When Samuel Badree had opener Steven Taylor stumped off a quicker ball in the fourth over, leaving the Warriors 12-2, there was pressure on the batters. The pressure was released after Mohammad Hafeez dropped both Babar Azam and Jason Mohammed in the following two overs.

Mohammad Nabi was the star with the ball for the Patriots, keeping a lid on the fluent Mohammed. He beat the bat on a number of occasions during his 4-0-18-1 overs, eventually luring Azam (21) into skying a delivery which Brathwaite caught for his one wicket.

Gajanand Singh, in for a rested Martin Guptil, played solidly for his 28, before eventually falling in that dramatic final over.

The turning point for the game was in the seventeenth over hit Hasan Ali into the deep, and an outstanding catch was claimed by substitute Fabian Allen. Shortly after, Shannon Cottrell had the dangerous Keemo Paul caught behind in the 18^th over to give the Patriots a chance at the death.

A chase, which had until the final over been straightforward, collapsed under pressure as keeper Devon Thomas ran out both Emrit and Tanvir with direct hits from behind the stumps. Succumbing to the pressure, Gajanand Singh then turned the ball onto his own stumps, leaving five required from the final ball. Despite a wild swing, the new batsman Rashid Khan was unable to lay bat on it, and Brathwaite wheeled away in celebration.

His team will be delighted to have made it two from two and will look ahead to their next game against St Lucia on Saturday as a chance to keep momentum going. The Warriors on the other hand will go into their game against Trinidad on Friday wondering how they lost this match, looking to regain their form.

Barbados Tridents 142-7 (Malik 33, Smith 28, Imad 2 for 15) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 130-6 (Simmons 53, Hosein 2 for 24, Khan 1 for 9) by 12 runs

A dramatic batting collapse by the Jamaica Tallawahs middle order, instigated by some accurate bowling from the Barbados Tridents was key to the Tridents emerging victorious by 12 runs in third match of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League. 

Despite losing Kumar Sangakkara in the first over of their run-chase the Tallawahs appeared on track to chase down the Tridents first innings total of 142 with Lendl Simmons anchoring the innings. However, the Tridents bowlers never let the Tallawahs get away in the first half of the chase and although the Tallawahs seemed to be in command they always required an acceleration.

That acceleration never came as the Barbados Tridents bowlers squeezed the Tallawahs at the opportune moment.

The Tallawahs collapse begun in the twelfth over when Andre McCarthy was trapped leg before wicket by a googly from Imran Khan to leave them 77 for 2. When Shakib Al Hasan was caught behind in the very next over the pressure on Simmons multiplied.

On a tough pitch for batting Simmons was the only player who managed to score with fluency. He used his feet excellently and hit powerfully down the ground for his 53 off 46 balls.

Batting in the searing heat appeared to take its toll on Simmons though, and he was run out immediately after the dismissal of Shakib as he mis-judged a single and could not reach for his crease when Nicolas Pooran threw down the stumps.

Simmons’ dismissal changed the complexion of the run-chase and when Jonathan Foo was dismissed shortly afterwards the Tallawahs were facing an uphill task, requiring 61 off 41 balls.

Imad Wasim and Roman Powell kept the Tallawahs within touching distance but when Powell was superbly caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Kane Williamson the match was put beyond them. The pick of the Tridents bowlers were the spinners, Khan—who took 1 for 9—and Akeal Hosein—who took 2 for 24.

Perhaps the difference between the two teams lay in the final two overs of the Barbados Tridents innings when some powerful hitting and wayward death bowling took 25 off the last two overs, elevating the Tridents from 117 for 6 to 142 for 7.

Up until those last two overs the Barbados Tridents innings never really got going with the batsman finding it difficult to time the ball well.

Williamson was the first player dismissed, caught at mid-wicket from the last ball of the Powerplay – mis-timing a pull shot off the bowling of Kesrick Williams. The muscular power of Dwayne Smith brought him four early boundaries but he eventually fell victim to the accuracy of the Tallawahs bowlers, trapped leg before wicket by Shakib.

On a difficult pitch for batting Shoaib showed his experience and skill to score 33 off 27 balls, two excellent late cuts off the bowling of Imad Wasim were the highlights of a workmanlike innings.

Shoaib and Pooran threatened to build a substantial partnership after Smith’s demise but Pooran’s attacking instincts got the better of him as he attempted to hit a third off side boundary in quick succession and picked out one of two boundary-riders off the bowling of Krishmar Santokie, leaving the Tridents 74 for 3.

It was then that the innings took a turn for the worse as Imad Wasim struck twice in one over, bowling Kieron Pollard with a ball that kept low and Christopher Barnwell with a quicker delivery.

Having lost two quick wickets in the middle of the innings, from that point on the Tridents had to adjust their expectations and Shoaib batted with restraint until the 18th over when he skied an attacking shot off the bowling of Kesrick Williams. It was then that Wayne Parnell and Hosein bludgeoned the late runs which proved to be crucial.

The Tallawahs will have an opportunity to avenge this defeat when these two teams meet again at the same venue tomorrow.

2017 HERO CARIBBEAN PREMIER LEAGUE – MATCH REPORT 2

St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots 124-6 (Brathwaite 31, Carter 29*, Emrit 2 for 14, Jacobs 2-23) beat Guyana Amazon Warriors 123-7 (Walton 60, Cottrell 2 for 18, Ali 2 for 19) by 4 wickets with 6 balls to spare

A blitz from Carlos Brathwaite was key in seeing St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots home in their first game of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) against Guyana Amazon Warriors by four wickets, after a constricting bowling performance had kept the Patriots’ target to just 123-7.

St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots won the toss and chose to bowl, and initially came under pressure from Martin Guptill, who registered three fours and a six in his 14-ball stay, which was worth 23.

But when he fell, bowled by a Samuel Badree googly that was too close to cut, Guyana Amazon Warriors struggled to maintain the scoring rate, picking up just 45 runs from the next nine overs. Babar Azam in particular found it tough going, managing just 21 off his 30 balls, and only striking a single boundary.

Azam’s dismissal, caught by Jonathan Carter off Carlos Brathwaite, led to something of a procession, with no batsman after him making it into double figures. This fact made Chadwick Walton’s steady hand – 60 off 51 balls, three fours, two sixes – all the more valuable in ensuring that his side would at least have something to bowl it.

Several of the Patriots’ bowlers kept things tight and emerged with excellent figures – Hasan Ali (2-19), Carlos Brathwaite (1-20) and Mohammad Nabi (0-17) all went at less than a run a ball.

In the chase, Guyana Amazon Warriors struck quickly, with Evin Lewis falling LBW to Steven Jacobs with just two runs on the board. And though Chris Gayle initially looked in good form, striking a six and a four, he fell cheaply, for 15.

St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots continued to lose wickets – Mohammed Hafeez for 19 to Rayad Emrit, Devon Thomas run out by Rashid Khan, and Brandon King for 11 to Jacobs – and found themselves 57-5 with more than half the overs gone.

From here however, Brathwaite and Jonathan Carter added 49 to put the result almost beyond doubt. Brathwaite was the aggressor, striking three sixes and two fours from his 19 balls before being dismissed for 31, while Carter was steady, and was not out at the end of the chase, as he and Mohammed Nabi secured victory with four wickets and an over in hand.

The result was especially harsh on Rayad Emrit, who finished with excellent figures of 2-14 from four overs, including the key wickets of Hafeez and Gayle.

The two teams are next in action tomorrow, when they face off again at the same venue.

2017 HERO CARIBBEAN PREMIER LEAGUE – MATCH REPORT 1

Trinbago Knight Riders 137-1 (Munro 66*, McCullum 58*, Taylor 1 for 22) beat St Lucia Stars 132-9 (Fletcher 26, Mayers 23, Shadab 2 for 15, Bravo 2 for 23) by 9 wickets with 56 balls to spare

A fantastic bowling performance by the Trinbago Knight Riders set up a convincing nine wicket victory over St Lucia Stars in the opening match of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) at the Darren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia.

After winning the toss and electing to field first the Knight Riders restricted the Stars to 132 for 9 before chasing the runs in 10.4 overs for the loss of the just one wicket.

The St Lucia innings was given a good start by Andre Fletcher who cut Khary Pierre for three consecutive fours in the second over, but the opening partnership was broken in that same over when Fletcher’s partner Johnson Charles was caught at backward point looking to hit a fourth boundary off the left arm spinner.

Neither Kamran Akmal—run out for 5 by a direct hit from Sunil Narine, or Marlon Samuels—caught on the off side boundary for 13, could inject the St Lucia Stars innings with impetus. After seven overs they were 56 for 3.

Things only got worse for St Lucia from there as the Knight Riders squeezed them in the middle overs with the spin of Sunil Narine and Shadab Khan and the variations of Dwayne Bravo.

On Hero CPL debut the 18-year old Pakistani leg-spinner Shadab took 2 for 15 in an assured performance. Shadab dismissed Fletcher—who got bogged down—for 27, and Jesse Ryder—who struggled to get going—for 18. When Dwayne Bravo bowled Rakheem Cornwall with a magical slower ball, the Stars hopes of making a competitive total went with him.

Although some powerful late hitting from Kyle Mayers and Jerome Taylor lifted the Stars to 132 for 9, only one score lower than that had ever been defended in the Hero CPL.

The Stars were given hope that they could pull off an improbable win when Sunil Narine was bowled for a golden duck by Taylor with the sixth ball of the innings but Brendon McCullum and Colin Munro doused the flames of a fiery opening spell.

After a tight first three overs the Knight Riders broke free in the fourth over, bowled by debutant Obed McCoy and hardly looked back. Munro in particular quickly sussed the pace of the pitch and propelled the Knight Riders to 57 for 1 at the end of the Powerplay. Once the field had dropped back McCullum matched Munro blow-for-blow. Munro reached his fifty off 25 balls and McCullum reached his off 24, hitting boundaries on both sides of the ground. Munro sealed the victory with his third six. TKR’s innings run rate of 12.84 runs per over is a record in the Hero CPL.

These two teams next play on Monday when they face each other again, this time at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.

The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) gets underway in St Lucia on Friday 4 August when the St Lucia Stars take on Trinbago Knight Riders at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium. This is the first of 34 action packed matches that will take place over the next six weeks before the final is played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad on 9 September.  

The Hero CPL will have more coverage than ever before, as in addition to the TV coverage the tournament will be broadcast live over Facebook to 64 countries for free.

In addition to the live broadcast there will an hour-long highlight show from each match and every Friday night there will be a weekly magazine show called “The Biggest Party in Sport.”

There are also plenty of other ways for fans to enjoy the Hero CPL with highlights packages being provided through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well was ground-breaking unique content from players and coaches. This is the Hero CPL’s fifth year and it is going to be the most innovative yet.

Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) that comprises of India’s premier sports channels, has bagged the exclusive broadcasting rights to the highly anticipated Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The league that has a bevy of cricket stars like Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Bravo, will commence on 4th August 2017 and culminate on 9th September 2017. The league will be broadcast live in the Indian sub-continent including countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan Nepal and Maldives, besides India. The network has also acquired the digital rights for the tournament and will live stream the matches in Afghanistan over and above these six countries on its digital platform, SonyLIV.

The tournament will be held across six scenic venues in the Caribbean and for the second time the fixtures will be played in Lauderhill, Florida, USA. This year the teams will include the likes of Jamaica Tallawahs, Trinbago Knight Riders, Tridents – Pride of Barbados, Guyana Amazon Warriors, St. Lucia Stars and St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots, all battling it out in an initial group stage format before progressing to the knock out matches.

The opening match of the league will see St. Lucia Stars take on the Trinbago Knight Riders to be held at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium (named after the St. Lucia Stars captain) on 4th August at 6:30 a.m. only on SONY ESPN.The game that day will see the likes of Brendon McCullum, Sunil Narine, Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson and Daren Sammy himself battle it out at the stadium. The remaining matches will be televised on SONY SIX & SONY SIX HD.

The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will be broadcast in the United States by Willow TV, the primary cricket broadcaster in the US. This will be the first time that Willow have brought coverage of the Biggest Party in Sport to the US, and cricket fans across the region will be brought coverage of the 34 matches of the tournament, including the four that will take place in Lauderhill, Florida on August 5 & 6.

In addition to the matches live on the Willow television channel on the Internet at www.willow.tv, they will also be partner with the CPL to air four matches live on their Facebook page that will be free to access by fans in the US. These matches will take place on Friday nights throughout the tournament. The matches will be as follows:

• Trinbago Knight Riders v Guyana Amazon Warriors, Friday August 11, 9pm
• St Kitts & Nevis Patriots v Trident – Pride of Barbados, Friday August 18, 9pm
• Jamaica Tallawahs v St Lucia Stars – Friday August 25, 8pm
• Jamaica Tallawahs v Guyana Amazon Warriors, Friday September 1, 8pm

The tournament gets underway on August 4 when the St Lucia Stars take on the Trinbago Knight Riders at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium before the USA leg of Hero CPL 2017 gets underway the next day.

The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will be working with ICC Americas, Team USA and Cricket Australia to provide a grassroots cricket clinic on Friday August 4 at the Central Broward Boys and Girls Club between 9.30am and 11.30am.

The clinic will see 200 boys and girls learn cricket skills from some of the best coaches available for working with youngsters who are learning the game. There will be a focus on batting, bowling and fielding skills for these young cricketers to get exposed to the sport in the hope of further developing coaching programmes in the USA.

In addition the Hero CPL will be sending four players from the Jamaica Tallawahs to meet the boys and girls and they will be available to sign autographs and pose for photographs.

The Hero CPL will also be providing tickets for the participants of the clinic and will be providing discounts for their families so that they can come and watch world class cricket when the Hero CPL brings four regular season matches to the Central Broward Regional Park and Stadium in Lauderhill on August 5 and 6.

Tom Evans ICC Americas USA Cricket Manager said: “We feel it is important to carry out suitable market research as we look to develop a National Entry Level Program bespoke to the United States. This clinic will play an important role in obtaining such feedback, from American children who have never played the game, while putting more bats in kids hands which is the ultimate aim of our participation program.”
